Cukrzyca to przewlekła choroba, w której organizm nie wytwarza wystarczającej ilości insuliny albo nie potrafi jej prawidłowo wykorzystać. Insulina to hormon, który pozwala komórkom pobierać cukier (glukozę) z krwi. Gdy jej brakuje lub działa słabiej, poziom glukozy we krwi rośnie. Z czasem może to uszkadzać naczynia krwionośne, nerki, oczy, nerwy i serce. Cukrzyca typu 2 przez długi czas może nie dawać objawów. Czasem pojawiają się wzmożone pragnienie, częste oddawanie moczu i zmęczenie.
Według pacjent.gov.pl w 2018 roku w Polsce na cukrzycę chorowało 2,9 mln dorosłych, czyli co jedenasta dorosła osoba. Cukrzyca rozwija się z wielu przyczyn, w tym genetycznych, i nie jest winą chorego.
Rodzaj cukrzycy decyduje o tym, do których badań klinicznych można się zgłosić, bo badania zwykle dotyczą jednego typu.
W cukrzycy typu 1 podstawą jest insulina, podawana we wstrzyknięciach lub przez osobistą pompę. Coraz częściej stosuje się systemy ciągłego monitorowania glikemii. W cukrzycy typu 2 lekarz dobiera leczenie indywidualnie. Stosuje się między innymi metforminę, inhibitory SGLT2, agonistów receptora GLP-1 i inne leki doustne, a w razie potrzeby insulinę. Ważne są też edukacja, wsparcie w codziennych nawykach i regularne badania w kierunku powikłań.
