Rak piersi to nowotwór złośliwy, który rozwija się z komórek gruczołu piersiowego. To najczęściej rozpoznawany nowotwór u kobiet w Polsce: w 2022 roku odpowiadał za 23,6% wszystkich zachorowań na nowotwory złośliwe u kobiet (Krajowy Rejestr Nowotworów). Rzadko, ale może wystąpić również u mężczyzn.
Rak piersi to w praktyce kilka różnych chorób. Po biopsji patolog oznacza w komórkach guza receptory hormonalne (estrogenowy i progesteronowy) oraz białko HER2. Na tej podstawie wyróżnia się między innymi:
Coraz większe znaczenie mają też dodatkowe badania, na przykład oznaczenie mutacji w genach BRCA1 i BRCA2 czy w genie PIK3CA. Od podtypu i tych wyników zależy zarówno standardowe leczenie, jak i to, do których badań klinicznych pacjentka może się zakwalifikować.
Leczenie planuje zespół lekarzy. Zależy ono od podtypu raka, jego zaawansowania i stanu zdrowia pacjentki. Stosuje się leczenie operacyjne, radioterapię, hormonoterapię, chemioterapię, leki skierowane przeciwko HER2, leki celowane i w wybranych sytuacjach immunoterapię. Część leczenia podaje się przed operacją, żeby zmniejszyć guz.
